Introduction to contributing to Slant

#Welcome to Slant
And thank you for being a part of our community!

Our mission in life is to help people make informed decisions and the contributions from the community is the most important part of making this happen. By working together as a community we can build an amazing knowledge base that takes the pain out of product research.

##How Slant Works

Think of Slant like a cross between Wikipedia and a Question and Answer site. Like a Q&A site all the information is organised around questions. And like Wikipedia all the information is collaboratively edited without individual users owning certain pieces.

This means you can collaborate with many people on the answers to the question instead of having to write a complete one yourself. This is very important as the information on Slant is always changing to keep up with the products so it would be too much work for one user to keep updating their answer. It’s also challenging to know everything about a certain product, so being able to collaborate with others is useful.

Another difference between Slant and a typical Q&A site is that the “Answers” take the form of Options (typically products) with structured Pros and Cons. Breaking down the Options into Pros/Cons lets you vote on individual reasons you like the Option and quickly skim the list of Pros/Cons.

##How to get started as a contributor

The best way to start contributing to Slant is to search for your favorite products and make sure they are both added to the right questions and have useful information for people looking to decide. Ask yourself why you like the product so much and make sure those reasons are covered in the Pros. Think about any issues you have had and add that as Cons.

If the product you want to add isn’t already on Slant and you can’t find an existing question to add it to, you can ask a new question just to add the product.

The next best thing to do is to patrol the Needs improvement section of the website to see if there are any questions you can help in.

Finally even if you don’t have any products to add you can always help find sources or add descriptions for existing Pros/Cons.

Suggestion to make each currently linked topic a separate post within this topic and link those in the intro post instead in order to clean up meta frontpage (so that the first half of the page is not filled with pinned posts) and have all contributing information in one place. (It would still allow discussing each policy separately with the reply threading).
